Courses

  • College Algebra – MAC 1105

In College Algebra you will learn concepts and develop skills needed in courses required for your major as well as learn to think analytically.

You’ll learn skills which will help you answer many questions that you face in real life. Some simple examples include: What score should I get on the final to pass a class? Is my phone bill correct? How do we know that the artifacts found in Miami Circle are at least 1800 years old? How much money will I have in five years if I invest $1000 now?

    Class meetings

The Mastery version of College Algebra that is taught at MMC utilizes the Math Labs. Each section meets once per week for a 50-minute lecture with an instructor. Students are required to spend an additional 3 hours per week in the Math Lab and one hour per week in a Math Gym (a problem-solving session with a Learning Assistant).

    Assignments

All of your assignments are in MyLabsPlus. The login information is sent to your PantherMail at the beginning of the semester.

Your assignments include MyLabsPlus homework and quizzes. All of them must be completed by a specific date. Please see your syllabus for the class schedule.

Homework assignments can be completed outside of the labs and can be attempted an infinite number of times. If you are having difficulty with the homework, go to the lab. There you will have support from both instructors and LAs. Quizzes can be completed in the labs or at home and can be taken up to five times. The best score is recorded in the gradebookYou can not receive help or use notes when taking a quiz in the lab but you can get help after, before you make your next attempt. This is a great way to be successful. So … take your quizzes in the labs for best effect!

Because the best way to learn mathematics is by “doing” it, in many instances, you will have to use available resources to work out solutions on your own, including the online videos and the Help Me Solve This feature in MyLabsPlus. And, LAs and instructors present in the math lab are always ready to help you.

    Testing

All tests, including the final exam, take place in the Math Labs, not in the classroom where you attend the lecture. Prior to each test, you will need to schedule your exam by choosing a day and time to take it. Visit Testing for more information.

  • Intermediate Algebra – MAT 1033

In this class, you will build mathematical vocabulary and acquire the skills necessary for future math and science courses.

You will learn skills which will help you answer many questions that you face in real life. Here are some simple examples: How much will I pay for a $34 item that is on sale at 30% off? How many gallons of gas can I buy with $20? How much fencing do I need to enclose a pen for my pet rabbit? How much money do I need for gas when traveling from Miami to Atlanta? What score should I get on the final to pass a class?

    Class meetings

There are two types of sections of Intermediate Algebra that utilize the Math Labs:

Sections that meet twice per week for a 50-minute lecture with an instructor. Students in these sections are required to spend an additional 3 hours per week in the Math Labs. Sections that meet three times per week for a 50-minute lecture. Students are required to spend an additional 4 hours per week in the Math Lab.
