Abstract: Motivated by arguments in supersymmetric gauge theories, Marino-Moore-Peradze introduced the concept of superconformal simple type for smooth, closed, four-manifolds and proved that this condition implies a lower bound, in terms of topological data, on the number of Seiberg-Witten basic classes. They also proved that this condition is preserved under the standard surgery operations on four-manifolds and conjectured that all simply-connected, smooth, closed four-manifolds with Seiberg-Witten simple type satisfy the superconformal simple type condition. In this talk, I hope to explain how the SO(3) monopole cobordism formula implies the truth of this conjecture.
